How It Works

Tailoring carb Intake to your metabolism.

1

Estimate TDEE

We first determine your total daily energy expenditure based on your physical attributes and activity.

2

Apply Diet Ratio

We apply the macronutrient ratio of your chosen diet (e.g., Keto uses ~5% carbs, Standard uses ~45%).

3

Calculate Grams

We convert the carb percentage into specific grams so you know exactly what to track.

Complex vs Simple Carbs

Quality Over Quantity

While hitting your gram number is important, the source of those carbs dictates your energy levels and hunger. Aim for complex carbs that digest slowly.

  • Complex Carbs (Eat These)

Oats, quinoa, berries, leafy greens, sweet potatoes. These provide fiber and sustained energy.

  • Simple Carbs (Limit These)

Soda, candy, white bread, pastries. These spike insulin quickly and lead to energy crashes.

Carbohydrate FAQs

What are "Net Carbs"?
Net Carbs = Total Carbs - Fiber - Sugar Alcohols. This is the amount of carbs that actually impacts your blood sugar. Fiber is indigestible and doesn't count.
How many carbs for Keto?
Strict Keto typically requires keeping net carbs under 20-50g per day. Our calculator sets the "Keto" limit to approximately 5% of your total calories.
Do vegetables count as carbs?
Yes, but they are mostly fiber. Green leafy vegetables have very low net carbs, while starchy vegetables like potatoes and corn are high in carbs.
Will eating carbs at night make me fat?
No. Total daily calorie balance determines weight gain, not the timing of your nutrients. However, eating heavy meals before bed might disrupt sleep.
Is fruit okay on a low carb diet?
In moderation. Berries (strawberries, raspberries) are the best option as they are low in sugar and high in fiber. Bananas and mangoes are much higher in carbs.
Why am I tired on low carb?
This is often the "Keto Flu." Your body is switching fuel sources. Ensure you are getting enough electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium) and water.
What is "Carb Cycling"?
Carb cycling involves eating high carbs on workout days and low carbs on rest days. This aims to maximize fat burning and muscle recovery.
Do I need carbs to build muscle?
Carbs are the body's preferred fuel for high-intensity training. While you can build muscle on Keto, having carbs around your workout often helps performance.
Are "whole grains" actually healthy?
Generally yes, compared to refined grains. They contain more fiber and nutrients. However, they are still carb-dense, so portion control is key.
How does fiber affect carb count?
Fiber is a carbohydrate but is not digested into sugar. It helps regulate blood sugar spikes and digestion, making it a crucial part of any diet.
